I've always been deeply curious about people. What they think about, what they value, what they know that I don't, what they carry quietly that nobody asks about. People fascinate me. So does life, and so do the experiences that shape both. The other day I started thinking about what makes someone truly unforgettable; the kind of person who stays with you long after they've left the room.
So I asked our Instagram community. 160+ people responded.
But before I share those responses (scroll on to read them), I wanted to share a message I received from my dad yesterday:
I teared up reading his message, because, well, I’m sappy like that. I told you I’m deeply curious… I’m also deeply sensitive (a blessing and a curse). My parents taught me something that has taken me further than quite honestly any other lesson in life. They taught me to be kind, to everyone, without any motive or expectation in return.
And here's the thing about genuine kindness, it stays. This level of kindness isn't complicated. It's being extremely present and really seeing someone. It's remembering their name, asking about the thing they mentioned last time, making them feel like they matter, because they do. People feel special when you remember them. Not what you can get from them, not what they can do for you. Just the person, as if they are the only one in the room.
So when I started thinking about what makes someone magnetic/ unforgettable, I already had a feeling I knew the answer. I just wanted to know if everyone else did too.

The most commonly mentioned answer was how someone makes you feel. And I want to sit with that for a moment, because it can go both ways.
Being unforgettable isn't always a compliment. Some people specifically mentioned trauma, rudeness, and negative experiences as what made someone unforgettable. Someone said "their character, good or bad." Another said "you forget what people do but you never forget how they make you feel- good and bad."
I'll give you a personal example. Someone I considered a friend, quite intoxicated, sat next to us at a very nice restaurant and spent the evening making comments about me that left both of our tables silent. He apologized profusely after. I appreciated that. But I looked at him and told him two things: that's one way to never get my business. And, people will never forget how you made them feel. I meant both.
And that's the thing about being unforgettable in the way most of us want to be; it's a choice. It's in how you show up, how you listen, how you treat the person in front of you, whether they can do anything for you or not, and whether anyone is watching or not.
