Why do women ghost men when asked on a date?

Why do women ghost men when asked on a date?

Why women ghost you, according to 21 women

I’ve always found the human brain fascinating, particularly its ability to protect us from pain (physical and emotional). How often do we find ourselves dissecting someone's behavior, rereading messages, or coming up with explanations for something that might actually be quite straightforward?

Maybe they're suddenly extremely busy, had a terrible week, lost their phone, or perhaps… they're not interested, or interested enough to make a sincere effort. Telling someone you're not interested requires a level of honesty and discomfort that not everyone is willing to deliver/ endure. Ghosting requires very little effort and conveniently eliminates the need for an awkward conversation. Not the most considerate thing, but certainly easier.

There are plenty of reasons someone might suddenly become unavailable. But I wonder how often we're genuinely confused by someone's behavior vs simply dissatisfied with the most obvious explanation: they’re not interested OR not interested enough to make a sincere effort.

I mean, what are you supposed to say? “I know I agreed to dinner, but I've since reconsidered, and after looking at your Instagram, I don't think we're particularly compatible”?

There's a reason people aren't always forthcoming with the truth. Sometimes honesty is uncomfortable, sometimes it's unnecessarily hurtful, and sometimes it's simply easier to say nothing at all.

Which brings us to a question a man from our community wanted to ask the women:

Why do women ghost men when they ask them out on a date? 21 women responded:

  1. She did some recon on your social media & didn’t like what she found

  2. They don’t like you, or they’re scared

  3. She has a man, not an official one tho… maybe an ex

  4. You snooze you lose (be quicker).

  5. Doesn’t like you enough to go on a date with you

  6. I used to do this when I was super anxious or wasn’t sure I liked him enough

  7. Sometimes the convo doesn’t go well and I can tell it’s not worth a date

  8. Sometimes we match with men we shouldn’t have

  9. A lot of us suck at saying no

  10. They were on the fence about meeting you already and waited until the last minute to decide

  11. They aren’t actually interested

  12. Easier to ghost than to straight up say they're not interested

  13. Full attention for a date. Sometimes we are just busy 🤣

  14. Are talking to someone. Or sometimes girls need a little more time to feel out the guy before committing to a date

  15. Sometimes we just need a distraction and aren’t fully committed to that person

  16. Same reason men do. only looking for validation and/or cheating

  17. She’s just not that into you (although if she went on that date this could change so ?)

  18. Honestly: because someone else I’m more interested has swooped in.

  19. They are trying to be polite by going along with it but they ultimately aren’t into it

  20. She didn't actually like you that much to begin with

  21. Probably likes someone more and is dating them

The consensus and top 3 reasons why she ghosted you after you asked her out:

1. Lack of genuine interest. She isn't interested enough to go on a date with you. She could have already been hesitant, or lost interest after getting to know you a bit more.

2. Avoidance. This is actually a consequence of #1. A lot of women find it easier to disappear/ not respond rather than engaging and a potentially awkward, uncomfortable, or disappointing conversation. Is it the most considerate or mature way to handle things? No. But I think both men and women are more inclined to take the easy way out when they barely know someone, especially when they convince themselves that they don’t necessarily owe that person an explanation.

I’ve been guilty of this myself. And honestly, some of these conversations are just difficult to have. Maybe you exchanged numbers with someone and agreed to a date because you felt put on the spot. Maybe you matched on a dating app, did a little Instagram investigating, and realized you weren't attracted to his best (or worst) picture nor to his lifestyle. Maybe you’re still hung up on your ex and thought putting yourself back out there was a good idea, only to realize you’re not quite ready. Or maybe you've had someone react poorly to rejection in the past and you're afraid of the same reaction.

3. Interest in someone else. She could be interested in someone else and there’s not much you can do about it (especially if she isn’t responding).

How many people are going to be that candid with a virtual stranger? Maybe some people believe that saying nothing is kinder than telling the truth. Whatever the reason, the outcome is the same: they're not making an effort to get to know you/ see you. And at some point, does the explanation really matter?

If a Google search brought you here, I hope you found a little clarity and can now direct your attention toward someone who's equally interested in getting to know you.

Stephanie
