Lab Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What 1,800+ men and women prefer

Lab Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What 1,800+ men and women prefer

Lab grown vs natural engagement rings: 1,800+ men and women voted

He’s cheap, she’s shallow, they’re brainwashed, they’re bloodstained. Depending on who you ask, everyone is doing something wrong. But beneath the (silently) loud opinions about lab grown vs. natural diamonds are the quieter questions people wouldn’t dare ask out loud. But you know I will 😇.

I asked 1,800+ men and women which they actually prefer, what matters most when choosing an engagement ring, and (because I’m willing to ask the questions everyone is too afraid to ask) what we’re really thinking when we see a massive diamond on someone’s finger.

Do women and men have a preference on lab grown vs natural diamonds?

Based on 1,800+ men and women who voted

After surveying hundreds of thousands of people through our Instagram community over the years, I've learned just how much wording matters. Sometimes changing a single word in a question can completely change how people answer it. This poll wasn't asking which diamond people would buy or which they thought was the better financial decision. It asked one simple question: Which do you prefer? The results were close, but natural came out ahead among both men and women.

What do men actually care about in an engagement ring?

Based on 1,000+ men who voted

The majority of men voted “whatever she wants”. But I don't think that's the whole story. I think there is a quieter preference hiding in those natural votes. A natural diamond formed over billions of years is timeless, romantic, and it existed long before the two of you. Yes, I know; De Beers might have sold us that feeling. But a slogan doesn't survive 80 years unless people want to believe it. Genius marketing or not, it stuck. A natural diamond means something, even to the crowd that swears it’s chemically identical to a lab grown diamond.

One thing I want you to notice before we move on: ethics and origin ranked surprisingly low. We’ll come back to it when we look at the women’s responses.

Does the size of the diamond say anything about the man?

Based on 1,000+ men who voted

The majority of men who voted view the ring as more reflective of their partner’s preferences than of their own status or wealth.

Men, you see a girl with a massive engagement ring. What is your first thought?

Based on 1,000+ men who voted

I'll admit it... I asked this question because I wanted to know just how judgey we really are. Turns out, many men make assumptions about the woman long before they think about the diamond. My guess? A massive rock isn't just seen as expensive, it's often perceived as a reflection of her expectations. Interesting…

Now let’s ask women the same questions:

What do women actually care about in an engagement ring?

Based on 800+ women who voted

The majority of us prioritize size and quality, while over one-third say the ring's tradition and symbolism mattered most. We aren't just choosing a diamond, we are choosing something we’ll (hopefully) wear for the rest of our lives. So it makes sense that we care a little more about how big, shiny, and meaningful it is.

RE: Ethics and origin: You can barely enter the lab grown diamond conversation without hearing buzzwords like sustainability, ethical sourcing, and environmental impact (the holy trinity of lab grown marketing. Oops, is my preference showing? 😆). Yet, when I forced voters to choose what actually mattered most to them (hehe, sorry not sorry), only 8% of women and 9% of men chose ethics and origin. Fascinating…

Ladies, you see a girl with a massive engagement ring. What is your first thought?

Based on 800+ women who voted

I believe lab grown diamonds have fundamentally changed the social signaling of an engagement ring. In the past, a boulder of a diamond quite reliably signaled one thing: money.

Now, 66% of women in this poll are trying to contextualize what they're seeing: Is it lab grown or natural? What does her partner do? How does it compare to mine? That doesn't necessarily mean we're judging her, but we are looking for the story.

A large engagement ring still communicates something socially, but size alone no longer tells the whole story. Where a big, shiny diamond once signaled cost and wealth almost immediately, lab grown has made that signal much harder to read. Which, naturally, has only made us more curious…🤣.

Ladies… between you and I, is there a certain price you hope your engagement ring will be?

Based on 800+ women who voted

I purposely phrased this as, "Between you and me" because I wanted women to answer honestly. Nearly half admitted they secretly hope their engagement ring is worth a certain amount. Whether that's about status, or simply wanting their partner to make a meaningful investment is a question I can’t personally answer.

So, lab grown or natural diamonds…?

Natural may have won the preference vote, but preference and purchase behavior are two very different things. These women also told us that size and quality matter more than anything else when choosing an engagement ring. And those two preferences don't always play nicely together when a budget enters the chat.

A woman can prefer a natural diamond and still choose lab grown. Again, preference isn't a prediction of what someone will buy. Based on these results and the conversations I've had with women in my life, I wager that if size and quality truly are the priority, more women will continue choosing lab grown, even while natural remains their preference. Lab grown has made something accessible that historically wasn't: the ability to get a very large, beautiful diamond without the very large natural diamond price tag. That is indeed a compelling tradeoff, especially when you start seeing more lab grown diamonds on the hands of women you actually know.

But I don't think that means natural diamonds are losing their emotional value. If anything, this survey convinced me of the opposite… Natural appears to have won the emotional vote, while lab grown makes a strong practical case. And let the record state once more: the practicality in question has far less to do with ethics and origin than it does with getting more bang for your buck. They won’t say it, but I will 😉.

My biggest takeaway is that women are allowed to care about all of it. Wanting a larger diamond doesn't make you shallow. Preferring natural doesn't make you materialistic. Choosing lab grown doesn't make your ring less meaningful. And hoping the person you marry makes a meaningful investment in something you'll wear for the rest of your life doesn't mean you're assigning a dollar amount to love.

Maybe that's why the lab grown vs. natural debate is so polarizing. We're arguing about diamonds, but what we're really debating is what makes something valuable. And that answer is deeply personal.
